Spectrum News Capital Region: Orthodontist to Give Free Braces for 25 Capital Region Kids

 

Adirondack Orthodontics is making the largest-ever donation of braces to kids in need in the Capital Region, donating treatment to 25 patients in need. "For us it's all about the community," said Dr. Sergey Berenshteyn. "We've been in this area now for a little over five years and we've been lucky enough to have excellent feedback from our patients, so we wanted to make sure we could give back."

In many ways, Jennifer Kelley has been training for her new job as an assistant economic developer at the Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership for much of her life. That's because Kelley is the daughter of Jon "Jack" Kelley, the local real estate executive who is best known for his work convincing Advanced Micro Devices (later GlobalFoundries) back in 2006 to choose the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County for its new billion-dollar computer chip factory.

He also noted that arts has generated $80 million in Saratoga County. "Culture and arts are so important to economic development," Vanags said.

Albany Business Review: Amazon HQ2 in NYC Could Make it Harder to Hire in Albany

 

Miriam Dushane has been recruiting software and other tech jobs for companies for decades in her role as managing director of Alaant Workforce Solutions (formerly Linium Recruiting). In the long run, Dushane sees it as a positive, bringing more diverse technical talent to the Northeast. “I’m always telling employers to look beyond the Capital Region, to bring more people here," Dushane said. "Amazon coming to New York City might be a way for companies to have a bigger pool of talent, and as Amazon continues to grow, there will be movement.”

The Saratogian: Adirondack Orthodontics Guarding Shen Hockey Players

 

Sports are often steeped in tradition and during the winter, hockey posters, program covers and social media are often filled with photos of smiling hockey players with missing teeth, proud of their toughness and missing front teeth. That is one tradition that the Shenendehowa ice hockey team has avoided with style and ease the past four years courtesy of Dr. Sergey Berenshteyn, D.D.S. and his Adirondack Orthodontics office. The local office once again provided 28 molded mouth guards for the varsity squad at no cost to the team or the parents.

Albany Can Code, a software programming workforce development nonprofit, is launching its first-ever courses in Saratoga County in cooperation with the Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership.Marty Vanags, president of the Saratoga Partnership, said that software coding jobs are in high demand, and training for software developers can be just the boost for some people who have been left out of the growth in the economy fueled by the semiconductor industry.

Albany Can Code, the nonprofit software boot camp training nontraditional students in the region to help close the tech jobs skills gap, is expanding and offering new coding classes this spring in Saratoga County. The latest survey from Alaant Workforce Solutions finds that 58 percent of human resource and hiring managers plan to add jobs for the rest of this year and the beginning of next. Miriam Dushane, managing partner, said she's encouraged by the findings. "That speaks volumes about the strength and diversity of the region's economy," she said.

Spectrum News Albany: Adirondack Orthodontics Hosts Screening; Part of 'Largest-Ever Donation of Braces'

 

Braces fix your teeth, but can also be an expensive burden. That's why a local orthodontics practice is stepping in to ease the financial pain and strain of getting your braces. On Saturday, Adirondack Orthodontics in Latham teamed up with Smiles Change Lives, an international nonprofit, for what organizers say is the Capital Region's largest-ever donation of braces. Hundreds of children were screened by a team of doctors at the Latham practice and up to 25 will be selected to receive treatment.

Saratoga Today: FARM-TOPIA: Ellms Family Farm Expands & Adds Winery, Commercial Kitchen & More

 

With the help of the Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership, Garth Ellms, proprietor of Ellms Family Farm, plans to turn 80 acres of Farmland into an agri-tainment destination called The Saratoga Farm Hub. Ellms acquired the property located at 284 Middleline Rd. in Ballston Spa on June 1 of this year. Plans include a commercial kitchen, small parcels of land that farmers can lease, an event space, a brewery, a winery, farmers’ market and overnight glamping (glamorous camping).

Local economic development leaders like Vanags believe it's an attractive recruiting tool, since many manufacturers demand a constant stream of power.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday at the Luther Forest Technology Campus for one of the most cutting-edge energy facilities being built in the Capital Region — a 20-megawatt energy storage battery facility. The Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership worked with Key Capture Energy to obtain financial incentives for the project. "We congratulate Key Capture Energy as it launches construction of this next-generation facility, which represents a significant investment in the economic, energy and environmental future of Saratoga County," Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership President Mary Vanags said. "We are delighted to have assisted the company in advancing this important clean-energy project, and especially pleased to be leading the first development on the Luther Forest Technology Campus since GlobalFoundries."

Spectrum News Albany: $2.5M Renovation for Academy of the Holy Names

 

A Catholic school in Albany has announced one of the biggest planned upgrades in its 134-year history. The Academy of the Holy Names has provided more details on the $2.5 million initiative to bring campus into the 21st century. The renovations will include a brand new construction of a north classroom wing. The space will feature a lounge area, new technology and a physics lab. There are also plans to renovate the main entry to improve safety and security.

Academy of the Holy Names, the Capital Region's sole private Catholic girls' school, is announcing a $2.5 million fundraising campaign. The money will be used in part to build a new north classroom wing for the 134-year old school, create a new physics lab and encase the front breezeway in bulletproof glass. Work is expected to begin at the conclusion of the current school year.

A Clifton Park orthodontist will provide braces and dental work to a number of children who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to receive the service. Sergey Berenshteyn, founder of Adirondack Orthodontics, is working with at least 25 local children from families unable to afford the otherwise costly care. "We want people to get this treatment who otherwise wouldn't be able to," Berenshteyn said. "There are a lot of people who might not be able to afford orthodontic care."

Dr. Sergey Berenshteyn followed his mom's footsteps after graduating from Guilderland High School by becoming an orthodontist with practices in Latham, Albany and Clifton Park called Adirondack Orthodontics. He recently recognized his parents' tenacity and hustle in two teenagers, both Guilderland High School students, both patients of his. And both are the children of immigrants. When they told Berenshteyn they wanted to learn to be orthodontists, he created paid apprenticeships for each of them.

A $9 million-plus battery energy storage facility will be built at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County, creating 25 construction jobs and nine full-time positions. The Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership worked with Key Capture Energy on the IDA application, and the Partnership will rebate its share of IDA fees, estimated at $33,750, to Key Capture Energy.

Albany Times Union: 3-D Images Replace Putty-like Molds in Capital Region Orthodontist Offices

 

Dr. Sergey Berenshteyn of Adirondack Orthodontics invested in an oral scanner in September for his Guilderland office, one of three that he operates in the Capital Region. The process is a hit, especially with patients who've gone through mold-making in the past, and just as important is the quality of the results. The braces, retainers and appliances that are made from the scanners are superior to those made by the molds and rarely need to be adjusted. "We're actually seeing a clinical improvement based on the quality of the images we're taking now," Berenshteyn said.
